Book Review: More than a Hobby

My brother recently was given the book More Than a Hobby by David Green Founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby (one of my favorite stores!). The day after he got it, he called me up and told me I had to read this book because he knew I would enjoy it. He was right.

Although I don't agree with all the sentiments in the book (Do I ever?), there were some excellent business principles given and it was an inspiring story. Hobby Lobby was started by a man who never went to college, did poorly in school, and borrow $600 to begin. He's made a lot of mistakes over the years and matured in his faith in the Lord through the process. This book chronicles his failures, triumphs, and personal business philosophy and how Hobby Lobby went from being a little cracker-box bedroom-size store, to being America 's home-and-craft superstore.

Hobby Lobby seeks to operate upon Biblical principles -- honoring the Sabbath day, honesty and integrity, putting God and family first, and they are also seeking to become completely debt-free. They have gotten a lot of flack for some of their stances, many of which might seem like "unwise business practices" to the world. But, God has blessed them for it.

A few quotes I appreciated:

I just continue to believe that if God is able to make 90 percent of a tithing person's salary go further than 100 percent, He is able to make six days better than seven.

There is no getting around the fact that Jesus offends some people. Nevertheless, He is too important in my life for me to cower in fear of mentioning His Name.

Concerning their practice of taking out "ads" for Easter and Christmas sharing the Gospel:

If I'm willing to spend money every other week of the year talking to forty-one milling readers about throw pillows, birdhouses, and wicker baskets, I ought to be willing to spend money twice a year talking to the same forty-one million people about my Lord.
