Keeping Computer Time in Check

By Crystal Paine

I know that I could spend hours surfing the web and reading blogs, if I allowed myself to. That is why I have purposely limited myself to onlya handful of blogs which I read on a regular basis through Bloglines. I have other blogs that I check on occasion, but only when I have time. My computer time is limited because I strive to put my husband, my daughter, and my home first. (Which I don't always suceed in doing, but I sure do try!) Most of my computer time is spent doing business work - writing, filling orders, answering emails, etc. So, much as I love blogging and reading blogs, I have very little time leftover for it. I try to fit it in in the little five minute cracks of time that pop up throughout the day.

I think it is very important that you have set boundaries for computer time. We have tried different things over the years to help keep our online time in check. Since our business revolves around the computer, I do have to spend a lot of time on the computer, but here are a couple things that have been helpful for me:

-Set the timer for 10 minutes of computer, then do 5 minutes of cleaning.
-Don't allow yourself to be on the computer for any longer than 30 minute increments.
-Turn off your computer a few times per day and leave it off for a while.

Probably the best rule we have instigated is to keep the computers shut off on Sundays. We have done this faithfully for a number of months now, and it has been a tremendous blessing and help. We look forward to a quiet day of rest, relaxation, and refreshment on Sundays.
