Q&A: The Ecomonics of Girls Living at Home

by Mrs. Crystal Paine

Annaelisabeth asked:Is it possible for an average girl to earn enough, from home, so that she isn't a drain on the household? A father with a large family would have to earn a fair sum to allow his daughters to stay at home. I don't wish to be negative but would worry about the economics especially once the father had retired.

Annaelisabeth: Yes! It is most definitely possible! If it wasn't possible, the Bible would have mandated that women work! It is actually much more cost-effective for young women to live at home than for them to move out. Just paying for an apartment and basic living expenses would cost you plenty more per month than living at home with your parents.

Young women who stay at home should be contributing to the family. I am not advocating that young women stay at home and sit around in pursuit of their own selfish interests. Otherwise, they might be better off in college or out pursuing some career. I know hundreds of young women who are living at home serving their family and others and they are in no way considered a financial "drain" by their parents.

There are thousands of ways a young woman can help contribute to her family: Learning to garden and preserve food, sewing clothes for herself and her family members, learning to shop frugally at the grocery store , starting a small business to pay for her expenses, helping her father in his business, developing a marketable skill, teaching music lessons to her younger siblings, researching the best deal for items her family needs to purchase.

I also believe that stay-at-home wives and mothers should be doing all they can to contribute to the financial well-being of the family. I don't necessarily mean all wives need to start some type of business, but they should be doing all they can do to be frugal, wise, resourceful, and industrious. Look at the Proverbs 31 woman. Two great books to help wives in this area are: Thriving on One Income and Miserly Moms.

If you are interested for my complete thoughts on this, ideas for earning an income from home in a God-honoring manner, and many testimonies of girls who are living at home under their father's authority and earning an income from home, get a copy of my book, The Merchant Maiden:Earning an Income Without Compromising Convictions.
