Two little words

This morning when I asked Kathrynne if she wanted something, she immediately responded with, "Yes, please." I stared at her blankly. Did she just say what I thought she said? Not just "Yes," but "Yes, please"?

You see, we've been working on saying, "No, thank you" as opposed to, "No!" the past few weeks. She's pretty consistent in saying it the right way, but we still have to correct her every now and then when she gets in a hurry. However, I've never, that I recall, said anything to her about responding with, "Yes, please."

At first, I thought maybe I just heard her wrong. But then, just a little while later, I asked her another question and she again responded with, "Yes, please." No, I wasn't hearing things. That polite little girl is really my own.

She still has so many things to learn and, believe me, some days I feel like we are making zero progress in the obedience department, but for a short hour today, this novice mama felt like God was whispering encouragement to "keep on, keepin' on" by using two little words from my daughter's mouth.

I really believe God sends us those little moments of encouragement just when we need them:) And this is a great reminder that children learn what we show them and not just what we tell them.

Crystal, that is so sweet! Isn't it exciting when they figure these things out?

Yet another reason to be home with our babies--I can't imagine missing all those small but stunning moments in their development.

Let me tell you the funniest little thing my 2 year old told me the other day.
He grabbed my hand and said, "Mama, are you crazy?" I got very wide eyed and just stared at him and said, "What?"
Then he said, "Are you crazy 'bout me?"
The whole family was brought to fits of laughter and tears!

My four year old son gave me such a moment today. At the grocery store, he kept saying, "Excuse me, please" every time we passed someone with our cart. He even held the door for an older lady because "My mommy says old people go first!" (Okay, we are still working on the skill of being tactful--fortunately, she laughed instead of being insulted)It does feel good when you see that your constant repetition of manners is paying off! I love it when we go out and public and Riley says "Thank you very much." Or he asks for things in complete sentences: "May I more milkies please?" People look at us like it's just unheard of - but it shouldn't be, should it? He still ocassionally calls out "Merry Christmas" as we leave a store. Kathrynne sounds really sweet! :)

Good for you! That happened with our boys. I believe they listen so carefully to adults and then try to copy our phrases. This is why our speach must be in love and grace. Keep up the good work. You are a great mom and so-o-o-o blessed.

Isn't it wonderful to see some good fruit from the good seeds you've been sowing?! Praise the Lord!

I found that they learn without you teaching them sometimes when they hear you say that! It is those things that make us feel like keeping going! I took all 4 boys to get haircuts today and I got a whole bunch of comments on how well behaved they were.

I am so glad that you are taking the time to instill manners in your child. I am a teacher, and it is shocking to me in our schools, and even in my church, how few children are being taught to speak respectfully. Keep on keeping on!!
