Pilates and cookies
In an effort to become more fit, I started doing Pilates this week. I checked out a bunch of exercise DVDs from the library and Pilates has been my favorite so far. So, I guess I'll stick with it for awhile and see if it helps any. I'm not real big into organized exercising. It seems like such a waste of time. I'd rather just run around doing my daily activities and get exercise that way. I mean, in the "olden days," they didn't have time to think about exercising - life was exercise. However, I'm not out hoeing a huge garden all day long at this point or carting water for drinking from a mile away, so I suppose that some sort of exercise would be a good thing in order to stay fit and healthy and active when I'm older.
But, I don't know how much of an impact 20-30 minutes of Pilates a day will make because I don't know what it is, but everytime I start a new exercise regimen, I seem to be doubly hungry. It sort of defeats the purpose of all the exercise if I eat twice as much as I normally would, right?
And, it doesn't help that I made a batch of my sister's famous can't-eat-only-one Chocolate Chip cookies earlier this week. (Yeah, for those of you wondering, I got over my only wanting to eat fruit and salads kick and am now back to eating my daily fix of chocolate!) They have all whole-wheat flour in them and oats so I'm sure they must have lots of health value - or let's hope they do, because I've sure been eating a lot of them the past few days!
In case anyone wants to join my healthy cookie-eating endeavors, here's the recipe. My sister invented the recipe years ago and it is hands-down the best cookie recipe out there... especially considering it calls for all whole-wheat flour.
Whole-Wheat Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies*
1 cuo shortening
1/3 cup peanut butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking sode
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups oats
12 oz pkg. chocolate chips
Prehat over to 375. Cream first six ingredients. Mix together next four ingredients and add to creamed ingredients. Mix well and stir in chocolate chips. Roll into balls (1 1/2-in or so). Place on greased cookie sheets and bake for around 10 minutes. Makes five dozen. Freezable.
*My family has never been one for short names - It it's a short name, it isn't worth having, you know. All of our names are multiple syllables and our cat names were even worse. "Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Peanut Butter Like No Other" were among two of the more memorable ones. Is it a wonder that we named our daughter Kathrynne Elizabeth Paine? :) Seems pretty short and sweet to me.

I used to do a 20 minute Winsor Pilates workout when I was still at home and I really miss it. Whenever I was regular about doing it, I felt better, more limber, had much more energy, and my muscles didn't tense up as much(I was doing a lot of driving at that time and would get neck aches).
Now that I'm pregnant I need to get back into something like that again, but I haven't liked any of the library pilates videos I've checked out. The Winsor method one was my favorite because it was more fast paced then the ones I've tried since.
Did you do any exercise when you were pregnant? I'd like some recommendations!

I make cookies similar to that recipe. I call them "Outreageous Chocolac Chip Cookies."

I love pilates! I recommend doing it 3 days a week and at least walk 2-3 days a week. The combination will work better than just one or the other. I lost a decent amount of my baby weight from my second child this way.

There are pilates for while pregnant. Check with your doctor..they ought to point you in the right direction. If you are already doing an excercise routine, you can generally keep with it...just don't overdue it. Also after your 4th month, you shouldn't be on your back...it can cause problems because the baby will be laying on the nerves and spine area.
OKay, hoped that was helpful :-)

I really enjoy Pilates as well. I took a class in college and got hooked. Right now I am alternating Pilates with The Firm. This is an intense work out and I am trying to lose some baby weight. I also did the Firm while pregnant but not the Pilates because you are on your back so much. What Pilates video are you using?
Oh forgot to add that I will have to try that yummy looking cookie recipe!!!!
So do you really use Shortening in them or do you use butter? I have found what kind of fat makes a big difference in cookies and I dislike the unhealthy stuff in shortening, unless they are super good and make up for it!
Can you use butter instead of shortening? I am not sure I can get shortening at my local supermarket (I am in New Zealand). I do know of something which I think is shortening, it is very expensive though. Those cookies sure look good, I was so pleased when I saw the recipe!
We've always used shortening (yeah, I know, not very good for your health - maybe the whole-wheat flour counteracts that??? :)) but I'm sure butter would work. You might want to reduce the salt, if so. I'll have to try butter next time I make these and see how it works. I usually always use butter in cookies but for some reason, I've always made these with shortening.
Oh and as far as exercising while pregnant - well, the first five months I was very sick and just in survival mode. If I got up, took a shower, got dressed, and did a little bit of housework, I was doing really good. The last four months, once I was finally feeling a little better, I did some walking and also a pregnancy workout video from the library, which I really liked. I can't remember the name but it was by Denise someone or other I think and it was pretty fast-paced - at least by my pregnant body standards. :)
Use butter in the cookies. It is really good.
I did pilates after my first born, but haven't had time to do them after my second one. My pilates video is different. They are like dancing pilates or aerobic. It is fun, as long as no one is watching me. I always feel so silly.
Oops! I was just at the store and neglected to buy chocolate chips! Can't wait to try these!!
Isn't Pilates GREAT? I have a friend who lost tons of weight and really shaped up beautifully that way.
I had the same difficulty with exercise and increased appetite before I learned I had hyperthyroid. You may want to have this checked out. It causes a myriad of symptoms, among them infertility problems. Do a search on WebMD and then talk with your Dr.

I tried the cookie recipe using butter in place of the shortening and they turned out delicious!!! I'm happy to have a more "healthy" cookie recipe to feed my three children who love cookies!! (I'm considering the fact that there is whole wheat in place of the regular white flour healthy!!)
Thanks again..

I don't know if you have a Dollar Tree near you, but the one here has Pilates VHS tapes. They carry Pilates for Dummies, Crunch Pilates, 10 Minute Pilates, Tummy Target Pilates, and a few others. I bought one of each to try out, although they are still in their packaging!
I just mixed up a batch of cookie batter (I doubled it to give half to the new neighbors) and it smells delicious! My 9 month old was very nearly climbing up the kitchen cabinets to get in on the yummy smelling action. I'll have to wait to bake them, though - (they're chilling in the fridge) hubby tried to make pizza last night and left smelly burnt cheese in the oven. Argh. Oh well, the cookies will be easier to scoop if they chill while I clean the oven. Hurray, cookies!
